Rumor: Tencent Acquires Maizuo.com

Sina Tech, 8/24/10

Multiple sources have reported that Chinese internet company Tencent (0700.HK) has acquired Maizuo.com, a movie ticket-booking site founded by a former Tencent employee. A source at Maizuo.com declined to reveal any details of the acquisition, but said that the site will continue to operate independently in the future.

After its founding in 2008, Maizuo.com began to partner with Tencent to offer service to users of the company's QQ instant messaging service.

According to its own figures, Maizuo.com currently offers coverage in 37 first-tier and second-tier cities around the country, and has been used by more than 1 mln users. In addition to Tencent, Maizuo has service partnerships with several dozen other firms, including file-sharing client maker Xunlei and China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) 139.com e-mail service.
