China UnionPay to Draft Internet TV, IPTV Payment Standards

DVBCN, 9/13/10

At the recent "11th Chinese Economic Development Forum" held in Beijing, Liu Fengjun, assistant director of Chinese banking network China UnionPay, revealed that China UnionPay was currently in discussions over the formulation of standards for payment through broadcast media such as the internet, television, and IPTV set-top boxes. The technology would enable people to pay their water, electricity and gas bills without leaving home.

Currently, Chinese e-payment service company and UnionPay partner Lakala is promoting internet television set-top box payment in pilot cities such as Jiangsu. As of August 2010, Lakala had built more than 40 thousand payment kiosks in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other cities.
