Rumor: Taobao to Unveil "TaoPad" Tablet PC

Industry sources have revealed that Alibaba Group's B2C and C2C e-commerce subsidiary Taobao is currently cooperating with a third party to develop a tablet PC, the "TaoPad," and plans to release it at the end of the year. The pad will feature pre-installed Taobao.com client software.

For assistance with the hardware side of development, Taobao has chosen West-Lake Electronics Group subsidiary Soyea Technology Co., Ltd. (000909.SZ). Soyea currently produces liquid-crystal displays, internet adapter cards, mobile internet devices, and electronic readers, among other products.

Sources further revealed that some TaoPads will be used to reward sellers on Tabao.com, while the rest will be marketed through the Taobao website channels.
