Tencent Pursues Third-Party Apps, "Like" Button

Sina Tech, 11/29/10

Martin Lau, president of Tencent (0700.HK), has told the Financial Times that the company plans to imitate Facebook by opening certain platforms to allow users to "like" third-party websites and application developers.

Lau said that Tencent is currently experimenting with approximately ten third-party applications for its SNS Qzone and third-party payment platform Tenpay. Tencent is also testing a "like" feature with a number of third-party websites. Currently, fewer than 10 websites are participating, but Lau said Tencent expects that number to grow five to ten times within the next 6 to 12 months.

Lau added that Tencent will give a revenue share to third-party developers, and expects the traffic to other websites to create a new advertising business for the company.
