Rumor: China Mobile to Build 20-30K 3G Base Stations in 2011

According to an industry insider, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) plans to deploy 90,000 2G base stations and between 20,000 and 30,000 TD-SCDMA base stations in 2011. A senior executive in China Mobile's planning department announced that China Mobile will increase its total number of TD-SCDMA base stations to 300,000 in 2012.
In 2011, China Mobile aims for TD-SCDMA to achieve a penetration rate of 20%, and deploy 32 experimental TD-SCDMA technologies on the network including innovations in network capacity, applied engineering, optimization and upgrade methods, IP conversion and TD-SCDMA/2G integration.
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Industry (MIIT) plans to see 3G network coverage extend to all cities at the prefecture-level and above as well as the majority of rural county towns and villages in 2011. Cumulative investment for 3G construction will reach RMB 400 bln, with the total number of 3G base stations reaching 400,000 and total number of 3G subscribers reaching 150 mln.
