China Unicom to Procure 5 Mln 3G Handsets

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) announced a major procurement of 5 mln WCDMA handsets today, comprising seven 3G handsets from Nokia, Samsung, Sony-Ericsson, LG, ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ), and Huawei, with up to 1.2 mln handsets procured per model. Unicom said that the handsets would hit the market in a coordinated launch on January 15, as part of which subscribers who prepaid RMB 800 could receive a free Wo-branded 3G handset.

The seven 3G handsets Unicom selected for their high price/performance ratio are the Nokia 2730c, Nokia 7230, Samsung S3370, Sony-Ericsson J108i, LG T320, ZTE E850, and Huawei U7520.
