China Mobile to Add 25 Mln TD-SCDMA Subscribers in 2011

Sina Tech, 3/17/11

During China Mobile's (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) 2010 earnings report press conference in Hong Kong yesterday, president Li Yue said that this year the operator aims to add 25 mln new TD-SCDMA subscribers, which would account for a third of China's 3G market.

As of the end of 2010, China Mobile's total number of TD-SCDMA subscribers had reached 20.7 mln.

Editor's Note: Earlier this week, it was reported that Yang Hua, the secretary-general of China's TD-SCDMA Industry Alliance, had recently said he expects China's total number of TD-SCDMA subscribers to increase by 50 mln in 2011 to reach 70 mln in total (See "TD-SCDMA Users to Reach 70 Mln in 2011," MD 3/14/11 issue). Both the TD-SCDMA Industry Alliance and China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) have, historically, made more aggressive forecasts for TD-SCDMA subscriber growth, while China Mobile has offered more conservative, and usually more accurate, estimates.
