China Mobile to Purchase 1 Mln Tablets in 2011

Bill Huang, GM of the China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) Research Institute, said in an interview with Taiwanese media yesterday that China Mobile would order 1 mln tablet computers this year for a total procurement value of RMB 2.2 bln. The operator plans to form strategic partnerships with Taiwanese OEMs including Quanta and Foxconn (2038.HK; 2354.TW), and to work with Taiwanese manufacturers to develop low-priced, high-performance "OPhone" tablets to combat rival China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) iPad advantage.
