Qiyi Begins Testing Film SNS Feature

Tencent Tech, 4/01/11

Qiyi, the online video subsidiary of Chinese internet company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU), began internal testing of a video SNS product, "Qitan" (qitan.qiyi.com), yesterday. The site has an interface similar to a microblogging product.

Registration currently requires an invitation code. After users register, they are asked to enter the name of their favorite film.

Qitan focuses on film content. Users' status updates are limited to 140 characters, and may consist of film dialogue, images, or videos; update categories include "I'm watching" and "I'm listening," and users may re-tweet or respond to other users' updates.

An industry source predicted that the site, currently in closed beta, could open to the public as soon as mid-April.
