Rumor: GAPP Instructs Dangdang to Halt Book Promotion

China News, 4/27/11

Following complaints by brick-and-mortar bookstores to China's General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) that Chinese B2C e-commerce site Dangdang's (NYSE: DANG) current book promotion, with prices 35% lower than the average market price, constitutes unfair competition, GAPP has reportedly met with Dangdang and asked the company to halt the promotion. According to industry rumors, Dangdang now accounts for nearly 20% of all publishing industry sales, which is significantly pushing down prices industry-wide.
