Sina Weibo Contemplating 6 Potential Business Models

Shanghai Evening Post, 4/28/11

At the recent Global Mobile Internet Conference 2011 in Beijing, Charles Chao, president and CEO of Chinese internet company Sina (Nasdaq: SINA), said that his company saw six possible business models for its Sina Weibo microblogging product: interactive, targeted advertising; social gaming; real-time search; wireless value-added services; e-commerce; and premium digital content.

When asked about Weibo's international competitors, Chao said that while Sina recently released an English-language version of its Weibo iPhone mobile application, and plans to release other localizations in the future, its primary focus is on expanding its Chinese user base rather than on moving into international markets. Chao added that 8 mln overseas Chinese-language speakers are currently using Weibo.
