Hangzhou-based C2C & B2C e-commerce site Taobao will launch a women's apparel channel (nvzhuang.taobao.com) tomorrow. Currently, Taobao has a male-female gender ratio among its users of 4:6, and, the company says, sales of women's clothing on Taobao have increased by 110% in the past year alone.
While spring and summer are down seasons for women's clothing retail businesses, stores selling women's clothing on Taobao have received 10 mln visitors a day since the beginning of May, and daily sales of more than 1 mln items.
Tu Lingce, senior director of apparel operations at Taobao, predicts that the new channel will give rise to more than a thousand online women's clothing brands, each with sales of more than RMB 10 mln, over the coming year.
