Rumor: Netease to Spin Off Portal Business for IPO

iMeigu, 7/06/11

An industry source has said that William Ding, CEO of Chinese internet company Netease (Nasdaq: NTES), had approved the company's plan, first rumored last Friday, to spin off its portal service as an independently listed company.

Under Netease's current service structure, the portal services most likely to be split off into the listed company include the news and technology content channels, Netease's microblogging, video, and blogging services, and its mobile internet (non-WVAS) services. Under the company's internal divisions, Netease's portal services do not include e-mail or the Youdao search engine. Netease's portal services model is similar to that of other portal sites in relying primarily on online advertising for revenues.
