China to Ship 8 Mln Knock-off Tablets in 2011

Sina Tech, 7/07/11

Sources within Taiwan's manufacturing industry have told Taiwan IT industry news site Digitimes that shipments of knock-off ("shanzhai") tablet PCs from mainland vendors reached 2 mln in Q1 2011, and are expected to total 8 mln for the year.

The tablets, which are priced below USD 250 for the entry-level market, use low-cost ARM processors from Qualcomm, Nvidia, and VIA Technologies, Android or Windows 7 operating systems, and resemble the iPad 2, Galaxy Tab, and eeePad in design. Some manufacturers are releasing dual-boot Android/Windows 7 models with Intel Atom processors. Others are incorporating additional hardware such as GPS and Bluetooth.
