China Mobile to Lay Submarine Cables with Overseas Operators

At the China Communications Industry Development Forum in Beijing this afternoon, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) vice president Lu Xiangdong said that China Mobile would adopt a policy of cooperating with other operators on constructing undersea international cables. Lu cited China Mobile's cooperation with China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) and China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) on the Xiamen-Kinmen and Tamsui-Fujian undersea cables, as well as the Tibet segment of the China-India cable, as examples.

Discussing international internet bandwidth resources, Lu said that China Telecom had 661 Gbps, China Unicom 357 Gbps, and China Mobile only 49 Gbps; and in terms of oversea points-of-presence (PoP), China Telecom had 13 PoPs, China Unicom 10 PoPs, and China Mobile only 2 PoPs.
