Tencent Tests Mobile Video IM App

TechWeb, 7/14/11

Shenzhen-based internet company Tencent (0700.HK) today began open beta testing of Weishi, its new mobile video instant-messaging application.

The application allows the user to make free video calls to anyone on their handset contact list and works across multiple devices and platforms, including iOS and Android devices. Users need only pay their existing WLAN, 2G, or 3G data fees.

Tencent on January 21 this year released its "Weixin" product, a free instant messaging app which allowed users to send text and photos between one another. Recently, a voice message forwarding feature was added to the app. Weixin currently supports iPhone, Android and Symbian devices.
