Former China Mobile Party Secretary Sentenced to Death

Xinhuanet, 7/22/11

The Cangzhou District Intermediate People's Court in Hebei province has found former China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) party secretary and deputy GM Zhang Chunjiang guilty on corruption charges, handing down a death sentence with a two-year stay of execution. The court also permanently stripped Zhang of all political rights and seized all of his personal assets.

The court ruled that from 1994 to 2009, Zhang used his position for personal gain, awarding contracts to friends and allies and extracting kickbacks. Zhang received more than RMB 7.46 mln in bribes from Song Shicun, general manager of Beijing-based Yidi Dianxun Technology, Yang Ruizhu, chairwoman of Beijing-based Sunshine Jia Xin Technology, and her husband Zhang Rui, all of which was subsequently recovered.
