Rumor: China Unicom Awards Cloud System Integration Contracts

An industry source revealed recently that China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) first cloud computing system integration tender had concluded with four companies - Huawei, Citrix, Digital China (0861.HK), and ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) - emerging victorious. Huawei won systems integration contracts for Desktop Cloud platforms in Beijing, Guangdong, Shaanxi, and Guangxi, while Citrix won contracts in Jiangsu, Fujian, and Chongqing.

China Unicom officially began procurement selection and testing for its desktop cloud platform in October 2010, and ultimately selected Citrix, Huawei, VMware, and Microsoft.

Huawei announced its first cloud solution in 2010. The company currently employs more than 6,000 people for cloud computing R&D, and has received more than 600 cloud computing technology patents.
