Rumor: Samsung May Upgrade 7.5G LCD Plant to 8.5G

Tencent Tech, 10/13/11

Samsung has submitted a request to Korea's Ministry of Knowledge Economy for permission to expand its 7.5G LCD panel production line to 8.5G in response to strong demand in mainland China for 48-inch TV sets, according to an industry source.

Another Korean LCD manufacturer, LG, has yet to begin constructing its 8.5G production facility in mainland China. If Samsung does upgrade its plant, the facility will not begin commercial operations until H1 2013.

Shenzhen-based LCD manufacturer China Star Optoelectronics Technology's 8.5G production line began mass production this week. China Star reportedly recruited nearly 200 employees from Taiwanese and Korean LCD panel manufacturers to assist in constructing the plant.
