Rumor: China Unicom to Offer iPhone 4S in January

Dfdaily.com, 12/27/11

An industry source has revealed that counter to China Unicom's (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) original plan to begin sales for the iPhone 4S on January 1, the network operator has opted to postpone the launch date for the device until closer to the Chinese New Year holidays (Jan 22-28). Another source has said that China Unicom will sell the iPhone 4S through its own service centers and Chinese consumer electronics and home appliances retailer Suning's (002024.SZ) outlets beginning January 6.

Industry sources also say that the China Unicom iPhone 4S handset will bear the model number A 1431, distinguishing iPhone 4S units sold in China from those available overseas, which bear the model number A 1387. Industry speculation suggests that the difference lies with the iPhone 4S' Siri speech recognition engine, which will not be available in China Unicom's iPhone 4S handsets.
