Shanghai Library Provides Free Digital Reading Service

Eastday.com, 1/31/12

Zhou Deming, deputy director of the Shanghai Library, announced recently that Shanghai residents would be able to borrow and take home a range of e-readers, including the Hanvon (002362.SZ) N618, using their library cards. The Shanghai Library has signed agreements with e-reader manufacturers under which the manufacturers will repair any damaged e-readers at cost, and will replace any broken or lost e-readers with devices of the same model. The Shanghai Library currently offers 1 mln electronic titles, 10,000 electronic periodicals, and nearly 1,000 electronic newspapers.

The Shanghai Library could also introduce a "thumb drive library" service, allowing digital borrowing of extracts or individual chapters from articles that would automatically "expire" after the end of the borrowing period, thus obviating copyright concerns.
