Dangdang Launches Book Cover Recognition Function

cnBeta, 2/02/12

Chinese B2C e-commerce site Dangdang (NYSE: DANG) launched a "book cover scan" feature for its mobile client today, allowing users to search for a book on Dangdang by taking a picture of its cover with their mobile phone cameras. While Dangdang is not the first Chinese e-commerce site to launch the feature, Dangdang says other retailers' implementations were unsuccessful, with poor cover recognition owing to their relatively small catalogs of books. With 600,000 books and magazines on sale, Dangdang reports greater than 98% success in cover recognition.
