Rumor: Baidu to Launch Cloud Storage Product

TechWeb, 2/15/12

An industry source revealed today that Chinese internet company Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) is preparing to launch an as-yet unnamed cloud-based online storage product.

The source said that work on the product had been proceeding for some time. It will differ from other cloud storage products by building on Baidu's open platform and user-base for cross-platform functionality and strong sharing options in addition to the usual complement of cloud storage features.

The product will reportedly offer users a large amount of storage space for images, documents, and videos, and will support retrieval and sharing from and to mobile terminals.

Baidu announced its mobile cloud strategy in December 2011. Wang Jin, Baidu's VP for technology, said that the company's plans would unfold in three phases: the launch of its Baidu Yi mobile operating system, the development of a cloud ecosystem, and the release of a Baidu cloud operating system.

As of press time, Baidu had not commented on the rumor.
