MIIT to Issue 4G Licenses in 2-3 Years

Tencent Tech, 3/12/12

Miao Wei, minister of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), said in a recent interview with China Central Television (CCTV) that 4G networks would require large-scale testing and commercial trials before being suitable for commercial use, and added that it could take two to three years for 4G licenses to be issued. The MIIT is currently engaged in large-scale testing of the LTE TDD 4G standard, also known as TD-LTE. Miao said that current plans called for 3G base stations currently using the TD-SCDMA standard to be upgraded to LTE TDD. Miao said that there were 220,000 TD-SCDMA base stations around China at present, a number that the MIIT will seek to increase to 400,000 over the next three years.
