China Telecom 3G Users to Exceed 2G Users

Netease Tech, 3/11/12

China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) marketing manager Liu Ping revealed recently that the operator plans to achieve a breakthrough in 3G subscriber figures with the help of a range of smartphones - including the iPhone 4S - that will see 3G subscriber numbers grow to double 2G subscriber numbers within the year. As of the end of January 2012, China Telecom had more than 129 mln CDMA subscribers, 38.7 mln of them, or roughly 30%, 3G subscribers. China Telecom has seen net single-month growth of more than 2 mln new 3G subscribers in each of the past seven months. In January 2012, the operator added 2.78 mln new CDMA subscribers, 2.41 mln of them 3G subscribers.

In addition to the iPhone 4S, China Telecom will also make the youth-oriented brand "Tianyi Fei Young" ("E-Surfing Fly Young"), which it announced on March 1, a key part of its strategy for pushing the size of its 3G subscriber base past that of its 2G subscriber base.
