China Adjusts Import Tax for Computers, Cell Phones, TVs
Tencent Tech, 4/16/12
According to a 2012 announcement released by China's General Administration of Customs (GAC), from April 15 onwards dutiable values and tax rates for imported goods including computers and peripherals, QWERTY handsets, and TV sets will all undergo adjustments.
Import taxes for computers and peripherals will be reduced to 10% from 20%, with different computer categories seeing adjustments in dutiable value. Laptop computers, for example, with a previous dutiable value of RMB 5,000, will now decrease to RMB 2,000. The new import tax as applied to the new duty-paid price will therefore result in a tax reduction of 80%, from RMB 1,000 (a 20% tax on an RMB 5,000 dutiable value) to RMB 200 (a 10% tax on an RMB 2,000 dutiable value).
The previous 10% import tax on QWERTY handsets will remain unchanged, but the dutiable value of QWERTY handsets will be reduced from RMB 1,500 to RMB 1,000, resulting in an RMB 50 tax reduction.
TV sets and all TV accessories and additional parts will see a tax increase from 14% to 20%, with dutiable values set within the range of RMB 1,000 and RMB 35,000 depending on TV size.
Editor's note: "Dutiable value" refers to prices established by Customs in accordance with relevant provisions for valuation and price determination; it is the basis upon which Customs levees taxes.
