Rumor: China Unicom to Launch High-End Smartphone

Netease Tech, 7/02/12

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) has drawn up plans to release an operator-customized smartphone aimed at high-end business consumers in H2 2012, according to a source within the company. China Unicom previously launched a number of WCDMA smartphones for high-end corporate users priced between RMB 2,500 and RMB 5,000, but the new handset will have a much higher price point.

In its partnerships with well-known handset brands in the past, China Unicom has required vendors use high-quality components, the latest mobile OS version, pre-installed mobile applications intended for high-end users, and a high-profile brand name and reputation.
