Rumor: Xiaomi to Merge MiTalk with YY

CCID, 7/27/12

An industry source reported recently that Chinese smartphone and Android application developer Xiaomi will merge its MiTalk instant messaging program with Guangzhou-based online game portal and browser game operator Duowan's YY Instant Messenger service. The source said Xiaomi and Duowan have begun discussing details of the merger. Following the merger, MiTalk will receive support for YY's voice messaging service, placing it in a position to compete with Tencent's (0700.HK) Weixin (WeChat) service. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun is an angel investor and majority shareholder in YY Instant Messenger.

A CCID reporter contacted Lei Jun and Duowan CEO David Li (Li Xueling) through their microblog accounts to request verification. As of press time, neither had responded.
