SARFT Tightens Restrictions on TV Drama Themes

The Beijing News, 8/03/12

A spokesperson for China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) confirmed today that the agency had recently issued six diktats regarding television serials. New TV series "must draw clear lines between ourselves and the enemy in dramas incorporating revolutionary history," "must not amplify or emphasize family conflicts," "must not engage in flights of fancy in historical dramas," "must be conscientious in guiding public values in dramas about business competition," "must not broadcast remakes or clones of foreign serials," and "must not encourage adaptations of online novels or series based on online games."

Implementation has already begun for all six requirements.
