China Adds Desktop PCs to Energy Efficiency Subsidy Policy

China's State Council, Ministry of Finance, National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) recently decided to extend government subsidies to cover six types of energy-efficient products, including desktop computers. The Ministry of Finance will allocate an additional RMB 14 bln in subsidies as part of the expanded policy, which will provisionally last for one year and is expected to generate RMB 155.6 bln in consumer sales and investment and save 100 gigawatt-hours of electricity each year.
China's energy efficiency project, which launched in 2009, initially focused on compact fluorescent lightbulbs and energy-efficient air conditioners, electrical equipment, and cars. Starting on June 1, 2012, the State Council expanded the policy to include flat-screen TVs, air conditioners, washing machines, refrigerators, and water heaters, and over 6.68 mln energy-efficient units from those five product categories have been sold this year since the policy was implemented.
