China to Terminate Rural Appliance Subsidies Program

China's Ministry of Finance announced on its website yesterday that the nationwide "Appliances to the Countryside" rural home appliance subsidy initiative will be halted completely as of January 31, 2013. A Ministry of Commerce spokesperson told journalists yesterday that although the subsidies have produced decent results, the program cannot be continued indefinitely, adding that it was always intended that the project would expire on that date. The representative was unable to say whether any new follow-up policies to encourage consumer spending would be implemented.
