Beijing City Government Launches Online Map Service

The Beijing News, 11/27/12

On November 26, the Beijing municipal government's office of surveying and mapping announced the launch of a new online map service, Mapworld (http://tianditu.cn).

Besides marking the locations of hotels, malls, and other businesses, Mapworld indicates the locations of traffic police, car inspection centers, overpasses, underpasses, and other public facilities. A spokesperson for the product said that Mapworld will support fuzzy search, including unofficial names and English abbreviations. A search for the alphabetical string "WC," for instance, will turn up 18,814 public toilets.

The map also indicates low-lying areas where water will accumulate in the event of a storm, and incorporates real-time weather updates from the Chinese Meteorological Administration.

Mapworld will release a free mobile edition of its service in the near future.
