On December 5, HTC announced the RMB 4,799 HTC Butterfly, its first-ever 5" 1080P Android handset. At the press event, HTC's president for the China region Ray Yam said that the company will continue to increase its investment in developing the Mainland China market.
The HTC Butterfly features a quad-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm processor and runs Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) with the HTC Sense 4+ skin. The handset has 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of ROM, as well as an eight-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, and comes pre-loaded with HTC's video, game, app store, and online storage services. The HTC video center incorporates offerings from Youku Tudou's (NYSE: YOKU) Youku.com and Tudou.com, Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) majority-owned subsidiary iQiyi, and LeTV (300104.SZ), while the game center presents China's top Android online games in a single centralized location. The online storage service is a partnership with Chinese internet company Sina's (Nasdaq: SINA) "Weipan" service, and now offers 50 GB of space as well as automatic backups of users' photographs, videos, and contact data.
At the press event, HTC also revealed the HTC 8X and HTC 8S, two Windows Phone 8 handsets it had previously announced with China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH). All three new handsets will go on sale in mid-December.
