Taobao Establishes Mobile Operations Platform

Ebrun, 1/15/13

Hangzhou-based C2C & B2C e-commerce site Taobao is preparing to launch "Qianniu" (literally "Thousand Oxen"), a mobile operations platform for vendors. Qianniu will allow Taobao vendors to manage product offerings, transactions, marketing, members, HR arrangements, and financial data on the go.

Taobao has already submitted iOS versions of Qianniu for iTunes App Store review, and will release an Android client by the end of January. Taobao plans for Qianniu to cover small and mid-sized Taobao store employees in Q1 2013, major store employees in Q2, and to expand to major Taobao store owners in H2 2013, with a goal of 1 mln UVs per day by the end of 2013.

Qianniu represents a migration away from the desktop for Taobao's platform and data. In the future, Taobao's data will be a combination of data from Taobao vendors' PC terminals and mobile terminals.
