MIIT, NDRC Announce Terrestrial DTV Receiver Policy

MIIT, 1/21/13

On January 20, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), and Ministry of Finance published the "Views on Implementing and Promoting Terrestrial DTV Receiver Equipment." The document calls for terrestrial DTV receiver equipment to become widespread over the next three to five years, with all televisions sold within China to be capable of receiving terrestrial DTV signals, with the goal of complete terrestrial DTV coverage by 2020.

Plans for terrestrial DTV implementation are divided into two stages. In the first stage, beginning January 1, 2014, all TVs measuring 40" or larger sold on the Chinese market will be required to support terrestrial DTV. In the second phase, beginning January 1, 2015, all TVs of all sizes sold in China will be required to support the technology.

The "Views" also call for televisions manufactured before the requirements take effect to be sold along with set-top boxes (STBs) supporting terrestrial DTV reception.
