Rumor: UCWeb, Easou to Merge

CCID, 3/07/13

According to an industry insider, senior-level managers from Shenzhen-based mobile search service provider Easou visited the offices of Beijing-based mobile browser developer UCWeb yesterday to partake in high-level meetings between the two companies. Easou CEO Wang Xi reportedly flew from Shenzhen to Beijing to participate.

"Alibuybuy," a popular anonymous Chinese tech microblogger, reported several days ago that UCWeb was looking to merge with one of China's larger mobile search companies, setting off rumors that the companies would merge. A number of Chinese tech sites have reported that the merger of UCWeb and Easou would value the new company at USD 5 bln, claims that UCWeb CEO Yu Yongfu called "outrageous."

Both companies declined to comment on possible merger rumors.
