Taobao Bans Externally Linked QR Codes

Sina Tech, 8/12/13

Hangzhou-based C2C & B2C e-commerce site Taobao has announced that it will remove all externally linked QR codes from the company's e-commerce platform within one month, due to cases of sellers circumventing standard transaction procedures, as well as cases of unwanted advertising and fraudulent behavior.

Taobao users will no longer be able to post new links to third-party websites using QR codes, and those with existing externally linked QR codes will be given one month to remove them from the site.

Editor's Note: Taobao's move to ban externally linked QR codes may be, at least in part, an effort to prevent Taobao merhchants from connecting with customers on Tencent's (0700.HK) WeChat mobile IM platform.
