China's 2013 Internet User Base Hits 618 Mln

China's internet user base reached 618 mln in 2013, up 53.58 mln from the end of 2012, according to the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC). Internet penetration reached 45.8% in 2013, up 3.7 percentage points from the end of 2012.

China had over 500 mln mobile internet users at the end of 2013, up 80.09 mln from the end of 2012. The percentage of internet users accessing the internet through a mobile handset increased to 81.0% during the period, up from 74.5% at the end of 2012. Among 2013 internet users, 69.7% used desktop computers to access the internet, down 0.8 percentage points from the end of 2012. 44.1% of internet users accessed the internet through laptop computers, down 1.8 percentage points from 2012.

Rural residents accounted for 28.6% of China's internet users during the year, or 177 mln people, an increase of approximately 21.01 mln users from the end of 2012. China's village-level internet penetration rate was 27.5% in 2013. The internet penetration rate in Chinese towns was 62.0%.

The percentage of internet users between the ages of 20 and 29 was 31.2%, up 0.9 percentage points from 2012. The percentage of internet users with monthly incomes between RMB 2,001 and RMB 3,000 was 17.8%. The percentage of internet users with monthly incomes between RMB 3,001 and RMB 5,000 was 15.8%. The percentage of internet users with monthly incomes of RMB 500 or less was 20.8%.

A total of 18.44 mln domain names were registered in China at the end of 2013, among which 10.83 mln use the ".cn" top-level domain (TLD), up 44.2% YoY and accounting for 58.7% of all registered domain names. China added 520,000 websites in 2013 to reach 3.2 mln, representing an increase of 19.4% YoY.

93.1% of Chinese companies used computers to handle business in 2013. 83.2% of companies used the internet during year, and 79.6% used fixed-line broadband. 23.5% and 26.8% of companies engaged in online sales and online procurement, respectively, while 20.9% of businesses used the internet for marketing and promotion.
