Taobao App Allows Account Registration Using Overseas Mobile Number

Ebrun, 1/20/14

Chinese C2C e-commerce site Taobao has released version 4.0 of its mobile client, allowing new users to register for Taobao accounts directly from their mobile handsets using mobile numbers as a user ID. In addition to supporting Chinese mobile number registration, the app also supports mobile numbers from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and more than 20 other countries, including Japan, South Korea, and the US.

Previously, users registering for a new Taobao account could only do so through Taobao's PC-based web interface. After selecting a user ID and password and filling in basic personal information, users were then prompted to verify their email address and mobile number. Under the new mobile phone-based registration process, users who fill in relevant registration information as prompted on their smartphones can successfully activate an account both with Taobao and with third-party payment processor Alipay.
