Rumor: China Telecom, Unicom Plan 4G Launch in Q1 2014

An industry source has revealed that China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) will launch 4G commercial service and 4G TD-LTE terminals on February 14. China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) is expected to launch 4G service in March of this year.

China Telecom has already begun its first round of TD-LTE terminal procurement, requiring that all 300,000 units procured be ready for release in Q1 2014.

A leaked China Unicom document has revealed that the company will launch LTE network services in 23 cities across China on March 1, with service expanded to 56 cities on May 17. China Unicom unveiled its first 4G handset, the Sony L39u, just before the January 31 Chinese New Year holiday. Pre-sales for the handset have begun across China.

Speaking at a recent government meeting in Beijing, China Unicom VP Zhang Fan stated that the company will "soon unveil 4G service packages."
