Alipay Wallet Partners with Local Government to Provide 'City Service'

eBrun, 3/19/15

Alipay, the third-party payment processor affiliate of Chinese e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba (NYSE: BABA), has announced that it has partnered with several local governments to provide a "city service" mobile platform accessible within the Alipay Wallet mobile app. The service can be used to check traffic infringements, license plate lottery results, hospital registrations, traffic conditions, as well as billing information for water and electricity.

The service was first launched in Hangzhou in Zhejiang province and has since been expanded to Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

Editor's Note: Alipay Wallet's new "city service" platform comes fast on the heels of a similar platform launched roughly 10 days ago by Tencent (0700.HK). For more background on Tencent's service, please see "WeChat Adds Daily Life Services Feature," MD 3/10/15 issue.
