Douban Establishes Film Production Subsidiary

Chinese arts and music SNS Douban has announced the formation of a film production subsidiary called Feichuan Pictures. Feichuan Pictures will manage screenwriters, directors, and content creators to develop movies based on novels from Douban's online literature platform, Douban Read.
The company plans to incubate 3 or 4 projects within the next year, with a focus on movies about "career women," "comedies," and "near-future science fiction." Apart from its own development plans, Feichuan Pictures will also invest in other films for joint production and engage in film promotion. The company is currently in the process of establishing an arts & culture fund to support film project incubation.
Feichuan Pictures also announced the launch of a young directors' short film project, which will provide about RMB 100,000 to 200,000 in funding to ten directors. These directors can film their own original stories, or obtain short film adaptation rights of original novels on Douban Read. Feichuan Pictures has also arranged nearly 300 screenwriters to assist the young directors.
