Sina Weibo Expands Character Limit for All Users from 140 to 2,000

Tencent Tech, 11/14/16

Chinese microblogging platform Weibo (Nasdaq: WB), a subsidiary of Sina (Nasdaq: SINA), has expanded the 140 character limit for posts by regular users to 2,000 characters, according to various reports by regular Weibo users. While scrolling through the timeline, only the first 140 characters are displayed along with a "See All" button to view the post in full.

Weibo originally announced it would remove the 140 character limit for all users by February this year, but was unable to meet the target. Weibo explained at the time that it temporarily rolled out the feature to premium members, but did not offer it to regular users. Premium members have had access to the expanded character limit since February.

Weibo has not made a public statement concerning the current change to the character limit.
