WeChat to Add Paid Content Feature for Public Accounts

Yicai.com, 2/14/17

Chinese internet and mobile services firm Tencent (0700.HK) is planning to add a paid content function for WeChat public accounts, and the function will be customizable by independent media operators on the WeChat platform, confirmed a Tencent spokesperson.

The story first came to light when Tencent chairman and CEO Pony Ma recently commented on a post made by IT commentator Hong Bo on Tencent's WeChat mobile messaging app, stating that Tencent will accelerate its plans to add a paid content feature to WeChat public accounts.

Earlier last year, rumors circulated that a paid content function was being tested on selected public accounts, but WeChat quickly responded to clarify that the paid content function was still being tested on an invitation-only basis, and was not yet available to all users. WeChat currently offers other content monetization mechanisms for public account users, including advertising and a rewards function for original content.
