Rumor: Alipay Begins Testing of Facial Recognition System for Payments

36Kr.com, 5/18/17

Chinese third-party payment processor Alipay has begun testing facial recognition payment, according to a video posted on social media that showed a woman utilizing the facial recognition feature to make a payment. There has been no response from Alipay regarding this development.

As shown in the video, this feature is currently available by invitation only. Facial recognition payment is a two-step process. First the app will scan a user's face, and once it has confirmed who the user is, they will then be required to enter the last four digits of the phone number associated with their Alipay account.
