Update: Alibaba Launches 'City Brain 1.0' Smart City System Management Platform

Chinese e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba Group (NYSE: BABA) has announced the launch of version 1.0 of its "City Brain" project for smart city system management following a year of testing in Hangzhou. Alibaba Group first announced the City Brain project at Alibaba's 2016 Computing Conference. The project aims to provide real time analysis and smart adjustment to enhance vehicular traffic flows for Hangzhou's permanent population of 9 mln. The first stage of City Brain was optimizing of traffic lights using various kinds of sensor to monitor traffic conditions. City Brain also detects traffic events, including congestion, illegal parking, and collisions, through Alibaba subsidiary AutoNavi's digital mapping services, traffic police radar and video data. Detection of events trigger mechanisms for smart resolution.

During a year of testing, City Brain was given control of 128 traffic signals in Hangzhou, decreased transit times in the test areas by 15.3% and highway travel times by 4.6 minutes. In the central urban districts, City Brain reported more than 500 incidents per day to police with a 92% accuracy. City Brain also cut the time for an ambulance to arrive on the scene in the suburban district of Xiaoshan by half.
