China's 2017 Box Office Up 13.5% YoY

China's State Administration of Press and Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) recently announced that China's total box office receipts reached RMB 55.911 bln in 2017, an increase of 13.45% YoY.

Urban cinemas were visited by consumers more than 1.62 bln times, up 18.08% YoY. Chinese-produced films had a box office of RMB 30.104 bln, comprising 53.84% of total receipts. Overseas box office and other sales revenue for Chinese films reached RMB 4.253 bln, an increase of 11.19% YoY.

In 2017, the total number of films produced in China included 798 dramas, 32 animated films, 68 educational films, 44 documentaries, and 28 specialty films. The total number of movies this year with more than RMB 100 mln in box office revenue reached 92, including 51 Chinese films.

China now has 50,776 movie screens.
