Rumor: China to Permit Online Retail Sales of Prescription Drugs

Vcbeat, 5/21/18

The China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) is reportedly planning to announce the "Regulatory Measures for Monitoring Online Drug Sales," which will permit pharmaceutical retailers to conduct online sales of prescription medications, according to a photo of a section of the regulations sent to Chinese media outlets. Retailers will need to meet certain conditions, such as sharing information in real-time and connecting digital prescription information with medical institutions to ensure the validity and traceability of prescriptions.

The CFDA previously held that online drug retail operators could not sell prescription medicine or controlled substances online. Websites selling medicine to individual consumers were not permitted to post prescription drug information.
