Ele.me Opens Drone Delivery Routes

Tencent Auto, 5/29/18

Online food ordering platform Ele.me, operated by Shanghai-based Rajax Information Technology, announced today the opening of China's first drone on-demand delivery routes. Ele.me's food delivery drones are now commercially operating. During the trial period, users waited an average of 20 minutes for deliveries.

A total of 17 delivery routes have been approved in Shanghai's Jinshan Industrial Park, serving more than 100 merchants over a combined area of 58 square kilometers. The drones primarily operate on a trunk line between two assembly points with delivery personnel at each end loading and unloading the drones. The airborne route reduces delivery distance by about 30%.

A second generation of delivery robots suitable for various indoor environments are poised to launch. Apart from taking on food delivery, they will also be able to serve as mobile unmanned snack shelves.
