Rumor: Didi Chuxing's Takeout Delivery Service May Refocus on Overseas Markets

Caijing.com.cn, 9/17/18

Chinese taxi booking and car hire service app Didi Chuxing's plans to expand its food delivery service Didi Foodie to the cities of Jinan and Xi'an in August were suspended in late July. It was recently reported that the cause of this is the company's decision to focus food delivery business overseas, specifically looking at Brazil and Mexico, where the company has ongoing car hire operations. Didi Foodie may be entirely transferred to the company's international department to oversee its overseas expansion, according to a source at Didi Chuxing. Like US rideshare service Uber's "Uber EATs," Didi Foodie would have drivers deliver restaurant takeout orders.

Didi Chuxing's PR department declined to comment on the proposed explanation.

Editor's Note: Didi Chuxing launched Didi Foodie on April 1, 2018. For more information on this topic, please see Didi Chuxing's New Takeout Delivery Business Takes One-third of Wuxi Market, MD 4/04/18 issue.
